Information on Graduated Licensing in British Columbia

British Columbia has a graduated licensing program for new drivers, young or old. There is a lot of information on the BC graduated licensing program on the ICBC website, but we’re going to summarize the information for you here.

For new drivers in BC, here’s how graduated licensing works:

  1. You have to take a written test and a vision test, and you have to be 16 years old or older.
  2. If you pass #1, then you are issued a Class 7 “L” license ( Learner's license ) which is valid for 2 years.
  3. You will have 12 months to learn practical driving before you can book a road test.
  4. Then you take the Class 7 license driving test.
  5. If you pass #4, you are issued a Class 7 “N” license which is valid for 5 years.
  6. If you have the “N” license for 24 months or possibly a little less if you take an approved driving course, then you are eligible to take the driving test for a Class 5 license.
  7. Take the Class 5 license driving test, and if you pass, you have a full adult Class 5 license.

Please note that while you’re in the graduated licensing program (GLP) you are not allowed to use any electronic devices while driving like your phone, even if it’s hands-free. There is also zero tolerance for any drinking and driving.
